Hermanus Whale Watching Photo Tour
We depart from Cape Town early in the morning, to arrive at Hermanus in time for the first Whale Charter at 9h00 for a 2 hour whale viewing boat cruise in Walker Bay, where these gentle giants gather every year between June to December.
Although Hermanus is known as the best location for land based whale viewing, to get good photographs proves to be very difficult from land, as the whales simply look like dark blobs in the water.
But viewing the whales from the boat allows you to get as close as 50 meters, and because the water is deeper you get to photograph them as they lob tail (holding its tail clear out of the water, like a giant black butterfly), sky hopping (lifting its head out of the water), playing with kelp and if you are lucky you might even get a shot of a whale breaching (when a whale jumps three-quarters out of the water, pivot onto its side and back, and fall back with an enormous splash)
After lunch in Hermanus, we photograph the African penguins at Betty´s Bay, and drive back on one of the most scenically beautiful roads in South Africa, known as the "Golden Mile" amongst landscape photographers, as the road hugs the mountainside just above the ocean. We spend some time here photographing the sun set.
