Lighthouse and Shipwreck Day Tours
South Africa has a beautiful and very photogenic coast line. Add to the picture a lighthouse, or even an old rusted shipwreck, and now you're talking. WOW!
The stories of the shipwrecks and lighthouses around the Western Cape coastline has for most part remained untold, and because most shipwrecks are often in very remote and isolated areas, not often photographed, or even visited for that matter.
Cape Point Shipwreck and Lighthouse Tour
We enter Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve at sun rise and walk along the pristine and untouched beach to the shipwreck of the Thomas T Tucker, an American Liberty ship that ran aground on Cape Point in 1942 on her maiden voyage. After hearing the story why Cape Point has two lighthouses, we first visit the historic lighthouse, built in 1860, before we make our way to the new lighthouse, built 87 meters above sea level. We lunch on Cape Point, and always recommend a light picnic lunch on one of the beaches away from the crowds. Bring your own or ask us to arrange it for you. We make our way around the Peninsula to photograph Slangkop Lighthouse, in the quaint village of Kommetjie. During certain hours you can climb to the top of the lighthouse. After another scenic walk along Kommetjie?s long beach to the shipwreck of the Kakapo, a British Steamer that ran aground in 1900.
These tours all include a fair amount of walking along beautiful coastlines, and a certain level of fitness is necessary. It is a very enjoyable hike for the outdoors and nature lovers.
